Antique German Wooden Beer Stein Barrel Type w/Pewter Mounts and Inlaid Lid c. Wooden steins were made in Germany for several centuries - it is probably the oldest beer drinking vessels.
However, they were never produced in industrial quantities, most of them is a production of small-town carpenters and woodworkers - and therefore they are unique and rare. This beautiful beer stein is made of wood in a very traditional way the barrels or kegs were made. It is constructed of vertical wooden staves and bound by brass hoops. The pewter mounts consist of the lid with the lip ring, the handle, and the foot ring. The lip ring and the foot ring hold the staves together. Nice very decorative pewter mounts with a porcelain inlay on the top of the lid handpainted with beautiful flowers. The type of the lid and the rest of the pewter suggest the stein was made around the 1890s or even earlier. The stein conditions are excellent for a wooden piece of this age. The wood had dried out and the staves are no longer tight but there is no damage and the stein holds well together. It is nice and impressive - 8 tall to the top of the finial, a little over 0.5 L capacity. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
