Antique Thewalt 485 Pottery Beer Stein Etched, Inlaid Lid, 1.0 L. Large (1.0 Liter) antique German beer stein made in "etched" technique that usually associates with Mettlach. This one, however, was made by Albert Jacob Thewalt - one of the major beer stein manufacturers in early 1900's Germany.
The stein is marked with A. Inlaid Lid, Pottery, Tavern Scene with Text. Thewalt GmbH began producing beer steins circa 1897, and by the start of World War I in 1914 had cataloged some 819 different models.
Stein production came to a halt at that point and wouldnt be resumed again until after World War II. This stein has number 485 under handle and signed Musterschutz on the bottom. Made in Germany during the late 19th century, these porcelain steins many of character form were marked Musterschutz a German term literally translated as copyrighted or patent-protected.
These steins were originally made by the firm of Shierholz & Sohn in the city of Plaue. Scherz bleibt froh das Herz. With beer and good humor the heart stays happy.
